Occupying one of the last available lots on Mount Tabor, an extinct volcano formation in Portland’s inner city, the Tonal House is an exercise in restraint. With stunning views of Portland’s city center to the west and Mt St. Helens to the east, the house gestures towards both with large, alternating openings. The main level was required to be long and deep because of neighborhood development standards, so double and triple height stair halls were placed in the corners and connected to the large openings to bring daylight throughout the house.
