Looking

We translate the design ideas and intent into a building. In close partnership with our trusted network of fabricators and builders, we continue to learn about and apply new techniques and craft, assembling the building with the same material care and innovation we employ throughout the design process. Each decision, whether at the scale of a single tile or a complete roof, is approached with the level of care and attention to technique and detail required to create a full harmonic experience, one in which the building resonates with the site, the hand, and its occupants.

Making

That root concept then transforms, through collaboration and conversation with the client, into a refined understanding of their needs and how to transform that into rich architectural responses. We concept-test through physical work: model making, material studies, full-scale mockups. We shift scales but keep the material experience consistent, seeking to understand how one stone choice plays with another wood choice, always searching for resonance between the natural and the cultural.

Building

Observation is at the heart of our studio; it is through a considered practice of deep looking and fine attunement that we find design ideas beginning to form. Each project begins with a conversation and a series of careful observations: of site, program, requirements, necessities, and wants. Then, through a practice of physical making—drawing and modeling—we define and refine the idea behind each project, formalizing it into the root concept that will drive each iteration forward.
